A cowboy remembers the days of the great cattle drives, and the transformation of the western plains into a cattle kingdom. (8 mins) This module tells the story of the great cattle drives in the years after the American Civil War, when cheap southern beef was driven north out of Texas to the railheads of Kansas, to feed the cities in the North and on the eastern seaboard. Teddy Blue Abbott, a cowboy from those days, recalls the drover's life; he recalls how the trail became impassible once the homesteaders fenced off the Plains; and he recalls his last great drive, north to Montana, where he bought some land and exchanged the life of a drover for the life of a rancher. The Australian cattle industry will be influenced by a number of extreme forces in 2016. From a cattle supply point of view, numbers over the coming two years will fall to levels not seen in more than twenty years. This alone will more than likely stimulate strong competition between restockers, feedlots and processors for the limited availability. However, increasing competition from Brazil and a weaker US beef market should be closely monitored. Top Documentary Films: The Science Behind Cattle Ranches A cattle ranch is a business and should be treated as such. Many who want to start raising cattle probably have had the romantic visions of cowboys riding the range and herding cattle all sunny day and would love to be ones to do that on their own ranch. If only they knew they could do that simply by visiting a dude ranch on their summer vacations! Sitting in the saddle watching or herding cows all day doesn't earn you much money either. A ranch must be operated in a manner that best suits your production practices and will hopefully give you enough income to keep you going for years to come. The following should be considered essential in operating a cattle ranch: Keep and maintain all your records. This ranges from calving to financial records. Software is available for these sort of records, though many ranchers still like to use the old pencil-and-paper method over the computer tablet. Fix and maintain fences and buildings. Fences are more important and more often fixed than buildings. Pasture permanent perimeter fencing should be checked regularly, ideally before and after moving cattle from one pasture to another. Fix and maintain machinery. All machinery involved in a ranching operation must be maintained and in good working order to be able to be used in the fields every year. Grease, oil, inspect, replace and repair any and all parts of machinery, from the tractor to the combine harvester. Manage your grazing operation. A big part of a ranch is the space utilized for cattle to graze. Pastures and grass must be monitored in order for them to keep producing healthy stands season after season, year after year. Know your stocking rates, rest/recovery periods, grazing pressure and soil quality to determine how long your pastures and range can be grazed. Ideally, you should manage your grazing operation on your ranch so that you are improving and maintaining soil quality, water quality, and habitat for other wildlife that reside on your ranch. Manage how you are feeding your cattle. There will be times when you cannot graze your cattle on pasture. This means you need to feed your cattle feedstuffs like hay and/or silage instead. Winter time or times of drought are particular times when feeding cattle is necessary, or any time when grazing cattle is no longer practical. You have a choice of feeding your cattle in a drylot, or adopting more sustainable and lower-cost practices of winter grazing them. Note though that the greatest source of financial loss is during winter and/or drought feeding, and is what makes or breaks the ranching business. Manage your forage/grain enterprises. Not all ranches are the same. Some may just have hay and grazing enterprises, others may have hay, silage, crop, drylot and grazing enterprises. Whatever you choose to have or have already, manage them according to when to seed, fertilize, spray herbicide, cut and harvest. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranch http://www.ranchland.com/type/cattle-ranches-for-sale http://www.king-ranch.com/operations/ranching/cattle/ http://arizonaexperience.org/land/cattle-ranching http://www.wikihow.com/Run-a-Cattle-Ranch

DEVERS-By Jennifer Gordy It's not your imagination, hamburgers are more expensive these days. Whether you are buying beef at the grocery store or at a restaurant, prices are on the rise. The cattle industry is watching history being made in more ways than one. Paxton Ramsey is a fourth generation Southeast Texas cattle rancher watching history unfold. The cattle population in the state is lower than it was 60 years ago Ramsey says, "Part of what we are seeing is what the consumer is seeing at the grocery store right now is Texas is in one of the worst droughts in history over the last several years and because of the lack of water lack of grass fires the cattle numbers the population of cattle in the state is lower than the 1950's." Ramsey says calves are selling for twice as much as they did only a year ago, "Because there are so few cows are producing calves for sale, what few calves are available it's simple supply and demand and it's allowed the prices to really skyrocket." By December the 140 cows in this pasture will have their calves within six months those calves will be ready for sale. Those calves may have three more owners before they reach the grocery store. The pasture to plate process is a costly one and that's why you are paying more for beef at the grocery store." Foreign markets are also playing a part in rising beef prices Ramsey adds, "We've got a lot of obligations worldwide to provide beef. The United States has the reputation of having the safest highest quality product in the world and even to the point where the Asians are importing three times what they used to from the U. S." Jason Marshburn is the manager at Daddio's Burger in Beaumont. He says the restaurant tried to absorb the rising beef costs. But, this month the restaurant raised burger prices, like many others in the industry. Marshburn says, "We were hoping it would go down. We were kinda waiting to see if it goes down if it fluctuates, but it kept going up and up and eventually we had to just and we talked to everyone in the business and everybody's gone up." Ramsey says, "And that's not something we can remedy over a year or two. It's going to take three to four years to raise enough female calves that we can turn into cows." And until then, consumers will paying more for their beef.
